What do our travelers say?

The trip to Guinea-Bissau was... I don't even know what words to use to properly convey what I experienced. When it was time to leave, I didn’t want to go anymore, but since I had to, I would have taken all the children home with me. I had the chance to travel with a group of wonderful people, and the organization was exceptional. Cristinne
Our group trip was perfect. Unique experiences, great people, memories to tell for many years to come. We recommend Malei Travel Borja and Arancha

Itinerary

At 16:00 we meet at Madrid Barajas airport with the accompanying staff of the group to start a journey to Senegal. We leave at 19:35. The duration of the direct Madrid-Dakar flight will be approximately three and a half hours. Arrival in Dakar, transfer to hotel, dinner and accommodation.

Relaxing

In the morning we meet for breakfast at 9:00, where we will get to know each other better. This day will be for relaxing, lying on the beach and enjoying the facilities of the Riu Baobab 5* all-inclusive hotel.

We recommend walking on the beach, relaxing at one of the four swimming pools, enjoying a cocktail at one of the four bars, having lunch and dinner at one of the five a la carte or buffet restaurants, or enjoying the Splash Water World water park, benefiting from the all-inclusive Fun4All regime.

Dinner with the whole group (time and restaurant to be confirmed later)

VILLAGES AND ETHNICITIES OF SENEGAL

After breakfast, at 8:30 we will leave to discover the real Senegal.

Senegal’s greatest asset is undoubtedly its people. An open and tolerant people, known in Africa for their sense of hospitality. Thanks to this excursion we will be able to come into contact with some of the most representative ethnic groups of the country, from the Peul shepherds, always accompanied by their large herds of zebu, to the Wolof and Mandinga farmers. We will visit different villages, we will be able to explore authentic cabins and get to know a way of life still anchored in traditions. On the way back to the hotel, we will make a stop in one of the traveling markets called “Luma”, where animals, food or fabrics from the whole region are sold. Women, dressed in their finest clothes, come to trade goods or simply to see and be seen. The small wooden stalls sell roots, stems and herbs from which to prepare local juices, such as Bissap, made from hibiscus flowers, or “Monkey bread”, made from the fruit of the baobab. At 1:00 p.m., it is planned to return to the hotel to relax and enjoy the facilities and the all-inclusive regime. Dinner with the whole group (time and restaurant to be confirmed later).

SAFARI

Today we will go on safari. After breakfast, we will leave in the morning at 07:30 by bus to the Bandia reserve, located about 45 minutes from our hotel. Once there, we will board the off-road trucks for a 1h30 to 2h safari in the reserve with experienced guides who will speak both Spanish and English. Bandia is a private reserve that covers 16 hectares and constitutes a natural space of great ecological value, essential for the conservation of local flora and fauna. We will be able to observe, up close, an important representation of West African fauna (buffalo, gazelles, giraffes, rhinos, zebras, ostriches, mandrills and thirty other different species). The reserve is also home to most of the country’s representative bird species. After the safari is over, we will head to the lagoon where we will see numerous crocodiles and giant turtles. Return to the hotel is expected around 12:45. The rest of the day is free to relax and take advantage of the hotel facilities. Dinner with the whole group (time and restaurant to be confirmed later).

DAKAR AND THE GOREE SLAVE ISLAND

Today we will be on a full day excursion visiting Dakar and Goree Slave Island. After breakfast, we leave the hotel at 07:00, heading for the capital. The route of about two hours will allow us to gradually discover a surprising change of landscapes before reaching the big city with its chaotic traffic and its incredible colors. Once in Dakar, we head straight to the jetty where we will take the ferry at 10 or 11:00 depending on traffic to Goree Island four kilometers off the coast and where we will arrive after a twenty minute crossing. The island is part of the sites classified by UNESCO as a world heritage of humanity since 1978. Consecutively Portuguese, Dutch and later French, the island became, starting in the 17th century, one of the main centers of the slave trade during the colonial era. With such a tragic past, the island is home to old colonial houses with wooden balconies and small cobbled streets leading to the sea. We will visit the slave house/museum, from where millions of Africans left for America on a journey of no return. On the island, baobabs shade the public squares, while bougainvillea adorns the reddish brick walls.

Lunch will be included in one of the island’s restaurants. Return to Dakar by ferry at 14:00 or 15:00.

The capital is located on a promontory in the south of the Cape Verde peninsula and has been the capital of the Senegalese state since 1960. Today, with a population of approximately 2 million, Dakar is a large city where western and traditional life intertwine. We will visit the center of the capital, Independence Square, the Presidential Palace and the old “High Plateau” district, once reserved for European elites, where you can still see some of the historic colonial buildings, such as the Chamber of Commerce and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. We will go around the peninsula on the so-called “little ledge” to get near the great Cathedral of African Remembrance, to the promenade bordered by the sea, where we will see the famous Mosque of the Divinity, built on the seashore by the fishermen of the Lebu ethnic group. We arrive in the Mamelles district, where the African Renaissance monument is located, and from this imposing statue one can admire one of the most interesting views of Dakar. We will end our city tour at the most western point of the African continent, “Pointe des Almadies”, from where we will return on the highway to our hotel, where we expect to arrive around 19:30. Arrival at the hotel and enjoyment of the all-inclusive regime. Dinner with the whole group (time and restaurant to be confirmed later).

THE ISLANDS OF THE SALOUM DELTA NATIONAL PARK

After breakfast, we are scheduled to leave the hotel by bus at 9:00 AM. We will take small roads leading us to the village of Samba Dia and the famous “ronin” palm forest. From there, the route will take us through typical African landscapes until we reach the inland coast of Saloum.
After an hour of travel, we will arrive at some of the small fishing villages along the coast, where we will board motorized pirogues, the traditional means of transport used in the region. We will navigate the calm waters of the Sine Saloum river delta, which is part of a natural reserve made up of a labyrinth of islands with mangroves dotted with oysters, small river landscapes with palm trees, and a blue sky filled with birds (pelicans, blue kingfishers, cormorants, egrets…).
The crossing, lasting a little over an hour, will allow us to explore this wonderful natural environment, where we may spot some traditional fishermen from the Diola ethnic group, who have come from the south to harvest palm wine, the Serer people, the local Christian inhabitants of the islands, or the Niominka fishermen.
We will continue our visit to Bird Island, an uninhabited place where birds stop and nest during certain periods of the year as part of their long migrations. There will also be an opportunity to take a short swim in the river.
Finally, back on land, we will enjoy an included lunch, with the chance to refresh ourselves in the restaurant’s swimming pool.
In the afternoon, around 4:00 PM, we will board our vehicle again for the return trip to the hotel, where we are expected to arrive around 5:00 PM. Upon arrival, we can enjoy the all-inclusive package.
Dinner with the entire group (time and restaurant to be confirmed later).

JOAL AND SHELL ISLAND

After breakfast, we will leave by bus in the morning or afternoon, as planned. We will walk along the coast to the village of Joal, where we will arrive in about 40 minutes. We are in the hometown of the famous poet and first president of Senegal, Leopold Sedar Senghor. We will leave our vehicle to cross the 725 meters that do not separate Fadiouth Island, thanks to its wonderful wooden bridge. Fadiouth is a village inhabited by the predominantly Christian Serer ethnic group, which accounts for approximately 95% of its population.

We will walk through the small streets, discovering the daily life of the villagers and the small altars where offerings are made, often closer to animism than to traditional Catholicism. A small church opens the way to another small island, which we will reach thanks to a small bridge and to a cemetery unique in the world. Built on seashells, the cemetery houses the Christian and Muslim communities at the same time, being an absolute example of tolerance and cohabitation. After the visit, we will return to our vehicle for the return to the hotel, where we will arrive after about four hours of excursion.

Free day

This day will be dedicated to relaxing at the hotel and enjoying the facilities and the all-inclusive regime, until the time of departure from the hotel.

Transfer to the airport and flight departure at 23:15.

Arrival in Madrid at 05:35 and the end of our services.
